Oy. The more I hear about the SG-1 'movie' the more I wonder if I should stay the heck away from it. To think I used to love the AU/Alt timeline concept. 'There But for the Grace of God' is perfection. Now it's been done to death, usually with the same ingredients. In the AU/Alt episodes we've had, Sam and Jack are in a relationship or locking lips because Mr PTB is channeling Jack and wants to shag Sam or some such thing. Whatever the reason, you can pretty much guarantee that Sam's role will be as Jack's beard girlie interest and the actress will get to do something really interesting and challenging, like wear a bad wig and, well, be more 'feminine' (because Sam Carter can't possibly be a woman without having long hair, wearing Girl clothes and snogging a bloke). Daniel will be off doing something heroic by himself. Teal'c will be...there. Jack will be a jerk or dead - I'm not sure which is worse. This latest offering will no doubt offer more of the same and it's written by Brad Wright. If it's not one 'ship' it'll be another.

On the other hand, both Heroes and Supernatural are delivering one of my favourite kinds of relationship, that of two brothers. I haven't had this much warm fuzzies since Simon and Simon. Without spoiling either show's finale, both sets of brothers managed to break my heart and turn me to mush. Studios seemed to have given up on buddy-buddy fare, so hopefully this is a way for them to give two guys loving each other (and expressing it) without worrying whether some cross-burner is going to show up outside their front lawn.

With Heroes and Supernatural both delivering quality relationships and edge-of-the-seat stories, no wonder SG-1 spoilers are sounding so stale. I just hope I can find the SG-1 characters enough to engage me, because it certainly hasn't been the writing that's kept me watching. It would be nice to have a dvd movie that I don't have to ff through but I suppose that's asking for the impossible.

I dunno. The PDL mpreg ep with the very special ass-baby twins ending sounds mighty tempting...

I haven't considered how SG-1 has remained stagnant but I think you're right. There's something old fashioned about SG-1 (and about SGA from what I've seen) when compared to other shows like Heroes. When Stargate's good it doesn't matter; there's always been something a tad ST: TOS about SG-1, so it's always had that slight feel of being a throwback to the 60's for me, but for the most part, I liked it. It worked for the show (usually) and the team interaction and friendships plus chemistry between the actors overcame the ocassional horror that was 'Emancipation' and 'Broca Divide'.

The fact I still love the characters and premise despite the crap that's happened says a lot for the show and how good it could be. Once those elements fell by the wayside, the dreariness of the writing became more and more apparent. While I still feel love for SG-1 there is an element of frustration - I can see what it could be, if only it would do its homework, tidy its room and stop smoking weed with the wrong crowd. ;-P I know what it can be because it was before and sometimes, however briefly, it is again.

The SG-1 characters were written as real people with real friendships once upon a time, which is why I fell in love with them. Daniel is probably my favourite character of all time. When you watch Heroes and Supernatural - even NCIS for all its flaws - and see the depth of writing for the characters, the interaction and relationships they're shown to have in addition to 40+ minutes of tightly-written exciting plot, I could weep for what the SG-1 characters are missing out on. Thank god for fanfic and the great episodes, where everything came together and the story was about the characters as well as shooting alien bad guys.

Regarding SGA. I read a comment somewhere that made me howl. It was pointed out that M & M would be in charge. To paraphrase: 'Good,' said the poster. 'With all the running down corridors M & M are notorious for, maybe we'll actually get to see some of Atlantis.'
