Blathering About SG-1 Continuum, Heroes and Supernatural

Oy. The more I hear about the SG-1 'movie' the more I wonder if I should stay the heck away from it. To think I used to love the AU/Alt timeline concept. 'There But for the Grace of God' is perfection. Now it's been done to death, usually with the same ingredients. In the AU/Alt episodes we've had, Sam and Jack are in a relationship or locking lips because Mr PTB is channeling Jack and wants to shag Sam or some such thing. Whatever the reason, you can pretty much guarantee that Sam's role will be as Jack's beard girlie interest and the actress will get to do something really interesting and challenging, like wear a bad wig and, well, be more 'feminine' (because Sam Carter can't possibly be a woman without having long hair, wearing Girl clothes and snogging a bloke). Daniel will be off doing something heroic by himself. Teal'c will be...there. Jack will be a jerk or dead - I'm not sure which is worse. This latest offering will no doubt offer more of the same and it's written by Brad Wright. If it's not one 'ship' it'll be another.

On the other hand, both Heroes and Supernatural are delivering one of my favourite kinds of relationship, that of two brothers. I haven't had this much warm fuzzies since Simon and Simon. Without spoiling either show's finale, both sets of brothers managed to break my heart and turn me to mush. Studios seemed to have given up on buddy-buddy fare, so hopefully this is a way for them to give two guys loving each other (and expressing it) without worrying whether some cross-burner is going to show up outside their front lawn.

With Heroes and Supernatural both delivering quality relationships and edge-of-the-seat stories, no wonder SG-1 spoilers are sounding so stale. I just hope I can find the SG-1 characters enough to engage me, because it certainly hasn't been the writing that's kept me watching. It would be nice to have a dvd movie that I don't have to ff through but I suppose that's asking for the impossible.

I hear ya. It does sound like we'll get more of the "same old, same old" storywise with a bigger budget so they can blow more shit up and look kewl doing it.

The first one is nothing the but the "real" season ten finale wrapping up the Ori storyline that I didn't like in the first place. The second is nothing but a temporal wankfest so they can work in some form of ship and possibly do something actually interesting that's reset at the end.

I'm pretty sure the movies are free of the restrictions of the USAF advisor (just as Atlantis is, as evidenced by pics of Sam with long hair), so they can ship all they want and ignore the regs.

Sadly I haven't read anything that makes me remotely interested in the SG-1 movie and other than a spoiler of Jack and Daniels wedding ceremony I can't think of anything that will interest me.

I find from watching shows like Heroes and Supernatural that television has moved on so much whilst Stargate has stayed stagnant. The SG characters I find to be written too flatly, without any real depth. Compare the relationships on SG-1 to those on Heroes and Supernatural and SG-1 comes up very, very lacking. Nothing seems to have impact on characters, they react in the moment and then carry on exactly as they did before, the relationships just seem to be so superficial and artificial.

I think Atlantis has fared slightly better, but I don't hold out much hope for this upcoming season at all *sniff*

I hold strongly to the opinion that Daniel Jackson is one of the most intriguing and interesting characters, along with Fox Mulder, that I've had the pleasure of watching on TV. I get a feeling that Hiro will be joining my favourite characters rota, but however much SG-1 varies in quality, and it certainly has over time, I have never, ever been disappointed by MS depiction of Daniel Jackson. That in itself sustains my interest in in SG-1 and will do for as long as MS/DJ is part of it. I also adore Vala, so any D/V action leaves me a very, very happy bunny.

Heroes is quality TV most of the time, but I don't particularly rate Supernatural, much to daughter's disgust. I've been spoilt by my love of the X-Files where Mulder did much the same far better and more interestingly than either Sam or Dean (plus I really don't like Dean!) I'm also somewhat ambivalent about the sibling relationships shown - I'd far rather have buddies caring for each other.

Oh God, don't get me started on Continuum. Don't, don't, don't ... oh, what the hell. I reckon it's just another excuse for more jaw-clenching AU ship, and since they "went there" with D/V, God help us all, I think they'll probably do the same with S/J. If they do that, I'll find something else to spend my dosh on, most likely Season Two Supernatural, which I am totally, wholly and completely in love with. Powerful, well-written, finely acted and, gasp, it has men being allowed to care for each other. What IS the world coming to?
I love brother stuff (the Winchesters and Petrellis are just most excellent) and I squeed rather loudly when you mentioned Simon and Simon ... the first show that made me realise that it was the brother/buddy thing that really did it for me.
