Season 10 Stargate
May. 30th, 2006 11:25 pmRight now it feels like I'm the only person in fandom who is looking forward to season 10, who doesn't think Daniel is going to be wallpapered so Vala or Mitchell or Sam/Jack Ship or some other Dire Threat can take over the show. I liked season 9. I thought it had about the same number of meh! episodes as any other season. I loved Vala, I loved Daniel and didn't think he was anyone's sidekick but was in fact carrying pretty much most of the show and at least half the 'meat' of the season. I enjoyed Sam again, thought Teal'c had more to do than he's had in years and found Mitchell inconsistent but no more annoying than Jack has frequently been and no more the Heroic Lead than Daniel. In fact, I thought Daniel totally owned season 9 with the exception of a few episodes when it felt like SCIFI Channel coughed in the ears of the Bridge Boys and reminded them that, actually, Mitchell should have something to do because he's the shiny new SG-1 leader.
So anyway. That's me, looking forward to season 10, spoilers and sides be damned.

Date: 2006-05-30 11:31 pm (UTC)I liked Season 9, for the most part, although I haven't felt the same need to rewatch as I used to. And I do feel that the writers were a little inconsistent with Browder's character, but it's early days yet. I really like the Daniel-and-Vala show, I think he sparks well off her and certainly wasn't overwhelmed by her; I've enjoyed the behind-the-scenes glimpses of their partnership this year. I think the team got a lot of play together, and it can only be better now that they've all had a chance to gel.
So you're not alone.

Date: 2006-05-31 06:23 am (UTC)After all we've lived through, it can't be worse. It has many chances of being good, like most of last season.

Date: 2006-05-31 06:33 am (UTC)I really liked 10 of the season 9 episodes and found many of the others tolerable. I only really disliked about 3 or 4 episodes--and I rate season 9 higher than seasons 4, 5, 7, & 6. hehe (Yeah, I'm such a geek. *g*)
My concerns about season 10 are mostly about Vala being there and anything to do with Vala being there (and I know you already know why). I suppose I worry about the other stuff, too. (Possible S/J ship is a big one for me, because I feel that would ruin the entire show, not just this season, but all seasons.) It's not just the spoilers & the sides, but just...I don't see much about season 10 that will be for me. I really liked Jack and never found him annoying, and I also really liked Mitchell at first. If I still liked Mitchell, I think I could overlook a lot and just hope for some Daniel and Mitchell scenes. *g* Without that, what's to hope for? Scenes of Daniel off by himself reading the phone book? *g*
But I know it sucks to feel alone. :-(

Date: 2006-05-31 09:02 am (UTC)Absolutely agree on your comments about season 9. I'm all for more Daniel & Vala, best chemistry since early Jack and Daniel. The behind the scenes stuff turns me to mush, they seem to be having so much for, and I do feel that showed on-screen via the characters.

Hey, I'd buy the boxset. Of course, he'd have to be wearing less clothing than usual.

Date: 2006-05-31 10:28 am (UTC)I mostly keep to my lj these days. Because of RL and because the fandom feels old. In 10 years there is room for everybody to be disappointed, and as you said below, people who don't like it have all the right in the world to vent because we did our fair share of venting. But somehow I managed to take a step back and purely enjoy the show, and I like that.
I miss the fic and I miss the old chatter, of course but we can't get that back. I have kept the people and that's what counts.
I may sound more giddy about Atlantis, but that's because there's where I get my fic fix and I like reading the discussions and communities. It's a younger fandom, and it hasn't imploded yet (give them time :P). I'm not involved the way I was with Sg-1. That can't happe only once, as I see it.
But when it comes to watching the episodes, I still think of SG-1 as the special one. I bounce about Atlantis, but then I think about SG-1 and all the stuff we have seen, and it's a wonder the enjoyment hasn't died after so many years.

Date: 2006-05-31 04:22 pm (UTC)Actually, it sounds like a fic I'd really like to read.

Both Lori and Brenda have been watching it and speaking highly of it so I'll be watching it very soon. I've liked the little I've seen. I'd like to catch up with season 2 before TPTB screw up and do something to piss off their fandom. ;-)

SG-1 has had such an incredible journey. Much of the trip was bumpy and there were a few places I'd rather not have visited and re-visited and re-visited and... That aside, it's still the fandom of my heart.

Date: 2006-05-31 07:01 pm (UTC)LOL I'd buy it, too. *g* I'm a bit partial to BDUs, though. :-)
I *was* That Annoying Negative Fan during season 4, 5, 6... ;-)
Heh. Well, I'm still rather new to fandom in general and also not even two years into this show yet. It's funny that when I read as far back as I could at OS and other sites, too, that I saw that I went through similar things that everyone else went through (as far as how I felt about the show and provided we had similar likes & dislikes), but all in a very short time. I'm not sure if that's better or worse.
I am relatively sure, though, knowing myself, that if I had been watching the show in real time (and hadn't already spent well more than $300 on all the DVDs), I probably would have stopped watching by the end of season 3 or early season 4 and never looked back. But maybe not. *g* The Power of The Daniel Jackson is pretty strong. *g* I've watched other shows, though, and not really cared how things worked out. I'm not sure why I care so much about this show. *g*
I don't really find it annoying when people are honest about what they think, though, and I also don't think it's being negative to say what you think if that's really what you think (and especially if one has reasoned thoughts). I'm sure I wouldn't have found you annoying. *g* OTOH, some people say the same thing over and over and over, and that can get a bit annoying. Then again, maybe that's relative, too. We all reach that "annoying, negative" point at different places, I guess. hehe I think what upsets me more than anything else in fandom anywhere (not just this fandom, but maybe especially this one) is when people tell me that everything I dislike about the show is all in my own head and if only I'd pretend it wasn't there, it wouldn't bother me. *g*

Date: 2006-05-31 09:36 pm (UTC)Others have said the same thing, that they felt things were changing for the worse, they went alone and BINGO! Lots of people saying the same thing. What's really funny is that I swear TPTB think the show isn't any different except for things they can explain away as budget issues.

It was around that same time that I got twitchy. Season 4 opener, Small Victories, just felt so 'off'. By the time Divide and Conquer aired I was jumping up and down on the newsgroup, stamping my feet and yelling "WHY?!" Then I spent far too much time having endless discussions about why it was all a bad idea and what the probable result would be. Mind you, it wasn't a waste of time as I got to know the SG-1 newsgroup crowd and they were a fantastic bunch and, even amidst the complaining, we had a lot of fun. The Toe Zone and The Arm-Eary were created during that time and what a loss to the fandom it would be if they never got created... ;-P (And if you've seen neither, count yourself blessed.)

I absolutely think people have the right to rant, moan and complain. I'm sure I'd be cheering on the people complaining if I agreed with what they were saying. I do think it's the way it invades threads and places that it simply doesn't belong. I stopped posting as a regular on the newsgroup just prior to the SDJ campaign because it didn't feel like the right place to post as I was just too negative.

Ugh. I loathe that attitude whether it's the "You're just delusional" attack or the "You haven't given it/him/her/them a chance!" (the chance being over a period of time anything from several episodes to a couple of years). If you're having problems with it you're having problems and no one telling you you're not really is going to change the fact.

Date: 2006-06-01 02:59 am (UTC)I'm afraid I'm so negative about Season 10 right now that I'm not much fun to be around. I stopped going to OS, Sony, GW--it's negative everywhere and it just feeds into my negativity. Does that make sense? Sorry, I've had a crappy day today and my brain is mush.
I'm going to be one of those people who wait and see what the East Coast thought of the show before I watch it out here. I hope to be pleasently surprised, but I'm hating the way Mitchell has turned out even more than I hate the S/J ship. Can you IMAGINE? YIKES!

Date: 2006-06-01 04:43 am (UTC)That's exactly what happened to me! *g* At first I tried to tell myself it was my imagination or that this weirdness was just temporary, but it wasn't. Then, yeah, I came online and saw that I wasn't the only one. *g* In a way, it was a relief because I wondered if I was just crazy.

lol I think that if I had had to wait weeks or months between episodes and seasons, I might have lost interest then. Watching it on DVD, sometimes 4 or 8 episodes a night (staying up all night *g*) kept the hope alive for much longer than I think it would have if I'd watched in real time. And it's interesting to me because seasons 1 & 2 were just so fantastic (for me) that they really are what kept my feelings about the show so strong through all of the other seasons and even now. *g* My love for Daniel knows no bounds--I hope. *g* (That may be my biggest fear about season 10--that I won't be able to love Daniel any more.)

:-( I probably don't really understand where it belongs or where it doesn't except in the protected threads. Or...well, I wouldn't even go to a Vala-love thread just for that reason. I think maybe a lot of us are confused about that, perhaps. Sometimes I try to just stay away from the discussions, but if lots of people are discussing something in a thread, I might jump in--and then other times, I can see it's so far off topic, but I really want to say something anyway. Sometimes I move it to another thread, but nobody sees it. Other times I just post and hope I won't get thwapped. *g* Or sometimes I just don't post at all even when I really want to. *g* I'm also not always clear about what's on topic and what's not.

I've been a bit astonished that it seems very prevalent in this fandom more than any other that I've been in (not that I've been in a lot and only one that was as divided and divisive and controversial as this one).
I actually stopped going to TWOP completely for now because of that. Once the new episodes start airing I may go back. I miss everyone there terribly, but I got tired of people saying stuff like that (or, really, exactly that *g*). Also, yes, I don't want to continually rain on everyone else's parade there. I also got bored with the continual, "Let's post about our favorite moments" as ways to hijack the discussions away from anything controversial. *g* (Those can be fun threads, too, but since there's only one thread there, it can just be a bit much at times if that gets boring.)
